Miss Bahamas Earth

Photographing Miss Earth Bahamas was exciting! Candisha wasted no time getting warmed up to the camera. I had briefed her an hour before on safety procedures and breathing from an air tank with a regulator. Also, the importance of relaxation of the face, body positioning, breath holds and continuous movement. This was her first time shooting underwater and I wanted her to start off slow. My concern when photographing first time models is usually comfort zone in water. Safety comes first!

Day 1

The water was quite cold, as this is considered our winter months here in the Bahamas. Water temperature was about 72 degrees Fahrenheit, and visibility was about 120ft. We decided to use the famous Jaws Beach for site location. It was the perfect protected cove and depth (6ft max) for Candisha to learn in. It was such a beautiful day, the sun was out and there was little to no wind.

As we entered the water we discovered a huge school of silversides. It would be so awesome to have animal interaction in the background of the images. Candisha was a pro, she was very good at taking direction. It was quite a day and we got so much done in less than two hours. We spent some time after our shoot to discuss what there was to improve on for our second attempt on Sunday.  Our improvements were facial expressions, relaxation of the face, hand movement and breath hold.

It was a challenge and Candisha doesn’t give up.

Day 2

Flawless! That is all… lol

Day 2 was fantastic, what an improvement. She was more confident and comfortable in the water. I guess my coaching and pep talks really do work. We started our day of just the same but this time she knew exactly what to do. Her movements were slower and flowed and she was a lot more comfortable with breath holds. She knew I would assist her if need and she could stand up and talk to me about something or to take a break. The water was a bit warmer and this time we were faced with a bit of a surge which was something new from Day 1. However, she stayed calm and comfortable.

It is so satisfying when an individual steps out of their norm to try something different and new.

Candisha also shared with me her views on why she entered the Miss Earth Bahamas Pageant. She has became self confident and has been able to inspire others to believe in themselves. Also, she wants to create projects that will clean up our Bahama land and encourage others to do the same.

She has inspired me to reach out to others whom want the opportunity to try underwater modelling but have fears of doing so. I believe with great coaching and patience anyone can do this. With the willingness to try something new and an open mind anything is possible.

“The underwater shoot was nothing short of amazing! Working with Katie was a great experience, she sent cool ideas before our shoot and we picked which poses she thought were best for me.  Katie is such a humble and caring soul, she is always concerned about your comfort and safety whiles your in the water. I am glad I was able to have my first underwater photo session with Katie. She has truly made it a memorable experience for me. Can’t wait to do it again!”
